According to the Public Relations Office of Iran University Press, today, the 3rd of Esfand, marks the anniversary of the passing of Dr. Yadollah Samareh, Distinguished Professor of Linguistics and one of Iran’s most prominent scholarly figures. He was the first president of the Linguistic Society of Iran and specialized in phonetics and phonology.
His principal legacy lies in laying the foundations of scientific phonetics in Iran and in authoring his enduring work, Phonetics of the Persian Language: Sounds and the Phonological Structure of the Syllable, which was published in 1999 (1378 in the Iranian calendar) by the University Publishing Center.
Phonetics of the Persian Language: Sounds and the Phonological Structure of the Syllable, which has appeared in two revised editions and, by 1399 (2020), had been published more than fifteen printings, is regarded as a landmark work marking the transition from traditional to scientific phonetics in Iran.
The significance and pioneering character of this book can be attributed to three key features.
The second key feature of the book concerns its theory of the syllable, which has been described as revolutionary in linguistic analysis. The section on the “phonological structure of the syllable” represents a turning point in linguistic research.
By formulating syllable patterns with precision and clarity, Dr. Samareh established a framework that later became the foundation for numerous studies in phonology, prosody, and even speech processing.
The third and most significant feature of Phonetics of the Persian Language: Sounds and the Phonological Structure of the Syllable lies in its comprehensiveness and applied approach. The book stands as an exemplary model of scholarly writing published by the University Publishing Center. Dr. Samareh succeeded in presenting complex concepts in clear and elegant prose, so that his work has remained not only an essential resource for linguists, but also an inspiring and illuminating reference for specialists in speech therapy and artificial intelligence.
With this book, Dr. Samareh endowed the analysis of Persian sounds with a distinct scientific identity.
